To achieve the ReInvent COST Action objectives we have established five interrelated working groups (WGs):
WG1 – Raw materials and resource-agnostic processing technologies
WG1 will create a comprehensive platform to collect and analyse data on European bio-based raw material streams, including availability, composition, technical properties, applications, challenges, and sustainability impacts such as biodiversity considerations. The platform will support evidence-based R&D, policymaking, and strategic utilisation of bio-based resources across industries, while also assessing the potential of artificial intelligence to provide early predictions of the material properties of complex biomass.
WG2 – Material properties
WG2 focuses on developing and harmonising methods for evaluating bio-based material properties by bringing together researchers, industry experts, and stakeholders to establish standardised methodologies, best practices, and reliable early-stage assessment protocols for material quality and performance during scale-up. The group also explores the use of artificial intelligence for early property estimation, promotes dissemination of best practices to accelerate bio-based material innovation, and supports collaborative research activities based on participants’ expertise and ongoing projects.
WG3 – Techno-economically viable sustainable products from resource-agnostic feedstocks
WG3 develops methods and frameworks for the early-stage assessment of the economic feasibility of bio-based materials, helping identify the key factors that drive competitiveness across applications such as packaging, construction, and other product sectors. By creating and improving tools for cost, market, portfolio, and techno-economic analysis, the group supports informed decision-making for commercialization and advances the evaluation of diverse bio-based feedstocks, technologies, and products.
WG4 – Environmental feasibility
WG4 focuses on the early assessment of the environmental feasibility of bio-based feedstocks and products by bringing together industry, researchers, and policymakers to evaluate environmental impacts, resource efficiency, and sustainability through life cycle analysis. The group promotes circular economy principles by identifying opportunities to reduce raw material, energy, and water consumption, while supporting the responsible use of resources through engagement with policymakers and alignment with international environmental standards.
WG5 – Dissemination
WG5 coordinates the dissemination of ReInvent’s results to project participants, stakeholders, and the wider public, ensuring effective communication, knowledge sharing, and feedback across diverse scientific disciplines. The group raises awareness of sustainable feedstocks and bio-based products through websites, social media, publications, webinars, and public engagement activities, while monitoring outreach and audience engagement to maximise impact.
